Executive Team

The leaders of Memorial Health System guide the rest of the staff through their strong commitment to outstanding, quality care to the community. Mark Miller

Mark Miller currently serves as CEO the Chief Executive Officer of Memorial Health System. He began his career at Memorial in October 2001 after serving for 20 years with the US Army Medical Service Corps.

His community and professional involvement is extensive. He is a Past President of Rotary; Past President of the Sunflower Health Network; Past Chairman of the Dickinson County United Way; Board Member for Boy Scout Coronado Area Council; Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus; Past Member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Hospital Advisory Committee. He currently serves as the Chair Elect on the Board of Directors, Kansas Health & Education Research Foundation; Board of Directors, Kansas Hospital Association; American Hospital Association Regional Advisory Board; and is a Board Member of the Abilene Area Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the St. Andrew's Men's Choir and Lector.

Mr. Miller earned a Master of Health Care Administration in 1994 from Baylor University where he was the Distinguished Honor Graduate. In 1987, he earned a Master of Science in Human Services from Murray State University; and in 1981, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Gannon University. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Mark and his wife Cheryl have been married 30 years and have two children; a Sophomore at Kansas State University and a Junior at Abilene High School.

Patricia Berns

Patricia CNOBerns, Chief Nursing Officer, has been making a difference at Memorial Hospital since 1985. She began her nursing career in 1973 and has over 20 years of management experience.

She is a Registered Nurse and obtained her degree from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa. She attended the Eisenbise Executive Development Institute at the University of Kansas.

She is responsible for nursing service employees at the hospital which include Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nurse Assistants, and Ward Clerks. Nursing service staff provides care in the Emergency Department, Outpatient, Obstetrics, Medical/Surgical Unit, Sterile Processing, and Surgery departments. She also oversees the Social Services Department, the Pharmacy Department, and the Laboratory Department.

Elgin Glanzer

The CFOChief Financial Officer, Elgin Glanzer, began his career with Memorial Health System in 1994 and has worked in the healthcare industry since 1988. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas, and a Master of Business Administration degree from Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. He is a Certified Healthcare Financial Professional, a member of the Healthcare Financial Managers Association, and has earned the designation of Fellow of Healthcare Financial Managers Association. He is a board member for the Sunflower chapter of Healthcare Financial Managers Association. He has served in numerous capacities in church leadership and currently serves as a lay leader.

Mr. Glanzer is responsible for assisting management and administration in making financially responsible decisions and maximizing resource utilization in the areas of materials management, computer information systems, and reporting financial information. He also completes required governmental forms and documents, and develops controls to ensure proper use and authorization of hospital monies.

Bob Brazil

Bob COOBrazil began his career at Memorial Health System in May 2002 as the Chief Operating Officer.   In 1970 his healthcare career started in the respiratory therapy field in Wichita and then advanced into Human Resources in 1976. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with an Accounting emphasis from Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas and a Master of Behavioral Science degree from Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma.

Bob is a member of the Kansas Hospital Human Resources Association, American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration, Abilene ROTARY Club, Abilene Masonic Lodge, and Abilene Elks Club. In 2010 Bob was distinguished by receiving the “Marilyn Gates Award” by the Kansas Hospital Human Resources Association. This award is given to one person per year in the State of Kansas. Currently Bob is an Area Deputy Grand Master for region #7 in the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Kansas.

His past professional and community involvement include the following: President Oklahoma Hospital Personnel Association, President of the Tulsa Personnel Association, President of the Kansas Hospital Human Resources Association, District Deputy Grand Master in the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Kansas, Worshipful Master of Benevolent Masonic Lodge #98, President Abilene ROTARY Club, officer in the Colorado Human Resource Association, and Abilene Planning Commissioner. He has also been on the Board of Directors of the Mile High Chapter of Legal Administrators, Abilene Masonic Temple Association, Abilene ROTARY Club, and the Abilene Area Chamber of Commerce.

His return to Kansas, after being out of the state for over 25 years, provided the opportunity to be near to friends and family members throughout the area. He and his wife, Alice, have been married 43 years. They feel the quality of life in Abilene is excellent! Bob and Alice have two married daughters, three granddaughters, and one grandson.

Amy Hoch Altwegg

Amy Village Manor Executive Director Hoch Altwegg has been the Executive Director at Village Manor since 2002. She has been an administrator since 1993 and has worked in long-term care since 1985.

She earned a Bachelor degree in Social Science with an emphasis on industry and labor relations from Kansas State University. She also received a secondary degree in gerontology with an emphasis in long-term care administration from Kansas State University.

Amy’s community and professional involvement consists of being a member of the Board of Directors Leadership Dickinson County, a member of the Board of Directors Youth Leadership Dickinson County, a member of the Board of Directors Quality of Life Coalition, a member of the Board of Directors Dickinson County Cooperative Extension, a member of the Board of Directors of Adult Home Care Administrators, serves on the Kansas Health Policy Authority, and is a past member of the Board of Directors Kansas Health Care Association for nine years. She is a member of the Kansas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, a Rotary member, a School Mentor for Big Brothers and Sisters, a member of the 2005 City Commission Strategic Planning Committee, and a Relay For Life Committee member (corporate sponsor chair). She is a 2005 Graduate of Leadership Dickinson County and in 2005 was honored with the Dietary Managers Association Administrator of the year award.
