Prevent colorectal cancer

March is National Colorectal Cancer month
Colorectal cancer – cancer of the colon and rectum – is the second leading cancer killer in the U.S. and all men and women aged 50 and older are at risk. The good news is that colorectal cancer is preventable, and if detected early, curable.
Data from the American Cancer society states that 1/3 of all cancer deaths were related to nutrition, physical inactivity, obesity, and other lifestyle factors. Eating a healthy diet and being active can promote health and reduce cancer risk.
According to the American Dietetic Association, the best cancer-protective meal contains at least 2/3 plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and beans. Meat and other animal proteins should be limited to no more than 1/3 of the meal.
Adding exercise to your routine can help reduce your risk for cancer, increase energy, reduce stress, and control your weight. Getting at least 30 minutes a day can make a big difference in your health and well-being.
To encourage healthy eating, exercise, and colon cancer screenings, Memorial Health System is offering a $100 grocery coupon and a free month’s membership to Impact Sports and Fitness to individuals who schedule a colonoscopy from Heartland Surgery during March, which is National Colorectal Cancer Month. This offer is limited so contact Heartland Surgery at 785-263-0505 to find out if you qualify.
